Sri Lanka has officially launched the “Rebuilding Sri Lanka” Fund to support rebuilding efforts and help communities affected by recent disasters including floods and landslides. Individuals and businesses can now contribute to this national recovery initiative through the official government donation portal: www.donate.gov.lk
Under the Inland Revenue Act No.24 of 2017 , donations made by individuals or entities to a fund established by the Government of Sri Lanka qualify as Qualifying Payments and can be deducted when ascertaining taxable income.
The law specifically allows a deduction for:
“a donation made in money or otherwise to a fund established by the Government of Sri Lanka.”
Therefore, donations made to the Rebuilding Sri Lanka Fund, being a government-established fund, fall within this category and can be deducted when computing the tax liability of the donor.
✔ Individuals
✔ Companies
✔ Expats
✔ NGOs
✔ Overseas donors
Both money and goods are considered qualifying donations.
Visit the official government donation page:
Through this platform you can:
donate money online via card payments,
make bank transfers (including foreign currency transfers),
donate goods based on currently required essential items.
The website also provides bank details and approved methods for both local and international donors.
Cash contributions
Essential goods
Equipment
Other relief-related items
All contributions are coordinated through government mechanisms to directly support affected communities.
Apart from the humanitarian value of helping Sri Lankan families rebuild their lives, this is one of the few opportunities where individuals and businesses can support national recovery while also benefiting from a specific tax deduction provided under the Inland Revenue Act.
If you are looking to support disaster-affected Sri Lankan families and communities, and at the same time make a legally deductible payment for income tax purposes, donating to the Rebuilding Sri Lanka Fund is a fully valid option under the current tax law.
